Grant & Minutolo Regain Coveted Canandaigua Crowns As Parrow Earns 1st LOLR Points Title
Johnson, Lafler, Ruggles, Guererri, Kerrick, Schultz cop Canandaigua regular season finales

The last day of August also marked the last night of points at Land Of Legends Raceway and the latest 'Saturday Spectacular' was among the biggest of the season as six main events were run and three more track point champions declared.
Early morning then mid-afternoon showers soaked the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval and in the customary pre-race meeting Sportsman drivers elected to run their make-up feature rain-delayed from Aug. 24 on Sept. 14 to determine the division champ. Still, despite a 2-1/2-hour delay due to the inclement weather, racers and fans were provided a unique features-only format in the double-points finale presented by Prouty's Bar & Grill and Seneca Meadows.
Feature race action began with C.J. Guererri dominating the Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock feature while 4th-place finisher Jimmy Grant claimed the points title for the third time in the past four years. All-time LOLR winged winner Darryl Ruggles followed up with his second MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car A-Main victory of the season although it was veteran Bobby Parrow settling for fifth to earn his first-ever points championship in Canandaigua. Third-generation wheelman Daniel Kerrick collected his third Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock feature win as Marc Minutolo placed third to remain at the head of the class in the final points tally.
Tim Lafler led the entire 25-lap distance to capture his first-ever checkered flag in the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman feature and Maguire Ford of Canandaigua New Legends Sportsman victor Mike Schultz matched that feat with a rare win in his first fairgrounds appearance of the season. On the flip side, all-time LOLR winner Alan Johnson returned to victory lane for the 129th time in Pepsi Big-Block Modified competition as he copped the 2nd Mike Scoppo Special held Saturday.
In search of valuable Super DIRTcar Series points in New York State’s Capital District on Saturday before rain washed out the show at Lebanon Valley Speedway, Mat Williamson locked up his first Big-Block points title at the fairgrounds the previous weekend.
Kicking off another memorable evening of entertainment at the fairgrounds, second-generation chauffeur Jipp Ortiz was honored as the second addition to the Land Of Legends Wall of Fame joining fellow full-fender driver Mike Minutolo in Canandaigua's Class of '24.
From the ‘Slowpokes’ to the fast lane, it’s safe to say speedway exploits were a way of life for Jipp. His father Ed, the 1962 & ‘63 Modified Sportsman track champ at Canandaigua, was a charter member of the ‘Slowpokes’ racing group that helped construct the original Ransomville Speedway in the backyard of grandpa Ortiz ‘Pedro Motors’ and later ‘Ed’s Garage’ in 1955; a short-distance from the track’s current site established on Brayley Road in ‘58, two years before Jipp was born.
Like his late father, a 1999 Dirt Northeast Hall of Fame inductee, Jipp raced at the hometown oval early in his career. Yet unlike his dad who contended on both dirt and asphalt surfaces throughout the region, mostly full-fender racing on the area’s clay ovals occupied his travels. Both found plenty of success wherever they contended, howeve as Ed ultimately reached the 200 win mark while Jipp racked upwards of 100 feature race triumphs in both full-fender and open-wheel competition. Well over half of Jipp’s career count was logged on the DIRT circuit including an all-time track best 40 Pro Stock victories at LOLR, adding one more checkered flag in the Sportsman ranks during a career in Canandaigua tracing the 2000-09 seasons.
After carrying over the family’s trademark #0, Ortiz dominated the DIRT Pro Stock circuit scoring back-to-back Syracuse Super DIRT Week wins in 2000 & ‘01 and capturing the coveted overall Mr. DIRT Championship in 2000, ‘03 & ‘05. He tacked on four Canandaigua season titles while registering a total of 56 DIRT Pro Stock wins, closing out his short-track career with 14 DIRT Sportsman victories and the 2010 Rolling Wheels Raceway Sportsman points crown.
Away from the cockpit, Jipp also served stints in WNY as head flagman at both Ransomville and the Lancaster Motorplex. In 2022 the “Ransomville Rocket” was named among the 50 greatest drivers in the first 50 years of Super DIRT Week, gaining induction into the FOAR SCORE Hall of Fame in 2023.
On Saturday night Ortiz enjoyed all the speedway action from high atop his VIP Tower perch, taking special interest in the stock car class competition highlighted by a pair of feature events in the season championship program. Guererri and Kerrick attracted the most attention with their trips to victory lane while Grant and Minutolo celebrated back-to-back title runs in their respective classes.
“This is the third championship so this (car) is no stranger to being in this place,” remarked Grant, who posted all top-5 finishes in the 11 Street Stock events run to garner another crown. “Thanks to (car builder) CRS and Paul Gavenda for building a helluva powerplant. This thing was a winning car tonight but I did the mature thing and got the championship. Congratulations to C.J., I’m happy for those guys.”
“Like I’ve said 100 times, this isn’t just my car, it’s all these guys. I’m just a lucky son-of-a-bitch that gets to drive it,” stated Grant, after the Penn Yan pilot parked his #36 Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating-Nardozzi Paving & Construction Chevrolet Camaro on the frontstretch to begin celebrating the latest achievement.
Falling in fourth on the starting grid to begin the 20-lap feature, Guererri wasted little time showing his intentions aboard the no. CJ1 Ontario Concrete & Paving-Tony's Topsoil-BarMor Puppies/Chevrolet Camaro as he ducked under Chris Woodard to forge the lone lead change the second time around. The final finishing order was already set by the halfway mark with Minutolo running second behind Guererri in the former #87 Carl Johnson ride followed by Mike Welch and Grant. Jared Hill overtook Woodard for fifth in the later stages yet it was still Guererri authoring a commanding 10 car-length victory under head flagman Scott Hixson’s double checkers.
“This thing is beautiful, the car is absolutely phenomenal,” beamed Geneva’s Guererri, after scoring his fourth career Street Stock win at the fairgrounds, good enough for third in points behind Welch. “Close Racing Supply (CRS) does a phenomenal job building these cars. Everything is completely flawless from front to back. I couldn’t ask for better craftsmanship, really. This car moves around a lot more. Just the way everything is put together, there is more movement. This car is much newer than my old one but it was time to update.”
“Thanks to Mike Kitchell, that dude’s been with me forever but this race is for my old man. He’s battling cancer and kicking its ass,” added an emotional Guererri.
Kerrick was just as decisive in the 15-lap Hobby Stock finale, mirroring Guererri’s success by overtaking Brighton Grant after just one time around the ultra-tacky half-miler and bringing it home for a comfortable five car-length victory ahead of weekly nemesis Justin Eldredge and Minutolo.
“This is our second night really having a car like this where we could just put it in the corner wherever we wanted to and just drive it,” noted Kerrick, after the Stanley speedster parked his #61 Fratto Curbing-Mike O. from Geneva Truck Repair/Chevrolet Camaro in the LOLR winner’s circle for the sixth time in his career.
“Was a little nervous, (Grant) and I are teammates. He parks right next to me, we’re all best buds. But I knew he wasn’t gonna try and cut up in front of me or anything going around (turns) one and two. Knew I could take the top and knew if I could get a good run I could get around him. He was gonna give me room but still race me good.”
While Kerrick took advantage of a pair of early cautions before charging from 10th to first in less than a mile, Eldredge was nearly as quick bolting from 11th to grab second six laps in. Minutolo remained patient, methodically moving toward the front en route to third-place at the line steering the no. 25B Honeoye Auto-Real Estate By Jenn-Tradition Automotive Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. and Jared Hill rounded out the front-five.
“Its huge for our team to go back-to-back (titles), a lot of car count in the Hobby Stock class and its a growing division which is really good to see,” said Minutolo, a five-time winner in ‘24 with the Newark driver now owning a half-dozen full-fender track championships in Canandaigua. “And to come out and do it again and be consistent, don’t think we finished out of the top-5 once. That’s a big testament to this team here and what we do in the garage.”
“Competitive class all year, had good battles with Nate (Peckham, pts runner-up) and Danny and Justin came on strong at the end. Was unfortunate last week in the heat race to pop a timing chain but to put in the back-up (car) to the back-up and come out, it held together so I’m proud of my team over here.” added Minutolo, who finished among the front-five in all 12 events run during the regular season.
Parrow was just as consistent in the Sprint Car ranks, with the Waterloo warrior registering 10 top-five finishes in 11 A-Mains behind the wheel of his no. 80 Seneca Meadows Inc-Re/Max Revolution-Proctor Enterprises/Shaw entry.
“The fans are what kept us coming back every week,” remarked Parrow, at age 56 the oldest track champ since car racing was launched at the fairgrounds in 1953. “We got a protest and we got every piece knocked off our car a couple weeks ago. It was my (crew) guys, have seen them more than anybody else the last month. Putting the car together and the motor then that wreck a couple weeks ago, it rattled my chain and rattled every part on the car.”
“Have to thank my mom and dad, they kept me going for 50 years in this sport. Took me up and down the east coast when I was a kid racing go-carts. Ran weekly and national events all around New York State. Been a great ride,” added Parrow, who closed out the season’s point chase ahead of Ruggles by a count of 500-472 followed by first-time winners Dillon Paddock (465) and Timmy Lotz (437).
Despite a late-race surge by Paddock, Ruggles had no problem in the 20-lap A-Main, out-gunning front row partner Cameron Moss at the drop of the first green and withstanding a pair of yellow flags to post his 49th career sprint win at LOLR.
Paddock blasted from a scheduled 15th-place start on the original 19-car grid to steal second from Lotz on lap 14 yet the Mike Mastin-powered 48jr. Stirling Lubricants-Champion Oil-VanBortel Trucking-Ruggles World of Autobody/Eagle mount would not be denied another trip to victory lane.
“Wasn’t chasing points this year but Bobby earned it,” said Ruggles, himself a seven-time season champion at the fairgrounds, after out-distancing Paddock by two car-lengths at the stripe. “He had a stellar year, think he never finished out of the top-5. He earned it, did a great job. I’m just racing for fun.”
“This could be my last year, everything’s up for sale after these last couple races. I’ve done my deal, had a good run. I’m not retiring because I’ve got quite a few cars but as far as racing full-time I’m not going to do that,” added the Hopewell hotshoe.
New winners have abounded this season at LOLR and Lafler made it two in a row for Sportsman drivers as he joined Aug. 10 victor Kasey Coffey in a flag-to-flag run.
“I think the conditions were all for us with the heavy track tonight,” figured Lafler, 63, Canandaigua’s Sportsman division rookie of the year in 2021 from Middlesex. “We’re fast on a heavy track, it’s the slick we struggle with. Felt good, the car felt fast … can’t believe we’re here (victory lane).”
Lafler pulled away after his pole-position start in the 25-lap feature with only division rookie Kennedy Payne able to track him down. Yet after runner-up Payne clipped her left-front wheel on the inside uke tire setting up for a turn four run, her night suddenly ended on the hook with just 10 laps complete, providing Lafler with plenty of breathing room the remainder of the race.
Veteran wheelman Kevin Ridley’s night also ended with a tow job on lap 21 to incur the second caution. With just four laps to go the leader was once again up to the challenge in his no. 51 Lafler Construction-Ironman Equipment-Gruschow Fab & Weld/Bicknell entry, establishing a solid half-dozen car-length victory over Frank Guererri Jr. Points leader Zach Sobotka stormed from sixth to third on the late restart, dropping back Paul Guererri and Nick Root on the final scoresheet.
“Those cautions came into play, wondering where (other drivers) were and how close they were coming,” divulged Lafler, his first win gave him four front-five finishes this season. “We were just fast enough to hold them off tonight. It’s a good feeling, looking forward to (next year).”
With the final regular points show not piggy-backing the Haers Memorial on Sept. 14, Sobotka (558) leads two-time track champ Matt Guererri (516) with Root (511) and Frank Guererri Jr. (491) still clinging to mathematical chances of claiming their first titles at the Finger Lakes flagship facility.
For the second straight season LOLR Promoter Paul Cole has staged a Scoppo Special and for a second year in a row one of Canandaigua’s all-time greats has taken the final checkered flag. Last summer ‘Super Matt’ Sheppard graced victory lane and Saturday night it was ‘A.J. Slideways’ Alan Johnson receiving the $2,000 winner’s check after the 30-lap romp.
“Hard to tell how good the car was with all the series guys gone but it was good,” disclosed Johnson, alluding to the absence of track regulars Peter Britten, Alex Payne, Williamson, Sheppard and younger brother Danny Johnson who were all downstate before rain forced cancellation of Lebanon Valley’s tour show. “Been pretty good when the track’s been tacky, when it gets slick we really struggle. Still, I can’t ask for much more (from car own Mark Spoor).”
With the exclusion of qualifying heats due to the prevailing track conditions, the pre-race draw ultimately determined the feature race starting line-up for the 'open' Big-Block/Small-Block Modified event. After an opening lap turn one skirmish involving Dalton Martin, Troy Sperring and Wally Wade, outside pole-sitter Kevin Root out-dueled Derrick Podsiadlo for the early lead.
Fourth starting Johnson moved into second on the third circuit and a half-dozen laps later took advantage of Root slipping high rounding turns one and two to take the top spot. Without a second yellow flag falling to slow the non-stop action, the five-time Canandaigua points champion cruised on for an eight car-length victory margin in the familiar #14J Rushco Gas Co.-Friendly Ford-Cargill-Conley Farms/Bicknell ride.
“(Root) was going good, really didn’t think I had anything for him,” admitted Johnson, who copped his first win at Canandaigua in 1975 and with two more triumphs in Small-Block competition now has 131 career victories at the fairgrounds. “We were pretty even I thought there. Think he got a little loose going into turn one up high and think he got in it and slid over the bank. Just gave me enough room to get by him.”
“Great to be in (winner’s circle) for Mike. Whenever a race is dedicated to someone it’s always something special. Especially him, he worked here for a long time,” added the Modified legend from Middlesex who turns 67 years young in October.
A long-time native of nearby Rochester, Scoppo passed away unexpectedly at his home in Davenport, Florida on Dec. 7, 2022 at the age of 63. Up north on raceday he always remained highly visible aboard his trusty 4-wheeler roaming around DIRTcar core member tracks in Canandaigua and Weedsport along with assisting teams pitside at Rolling Wheels Raceway and the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Cathy Scoppo, wife of Mike, spearheaded the inclusion of ‘Hard Luck’ awards during the night with Troy Sperring ($200 Mod), Kennedy Payne ($200 Spt), Matt Rotz ($200 305), Pat Hobbs ($100 Sts) and Blane Smith ($100 Hob) taking home some extra cash.
Mirroring the success of Lafler in the headline Sportsman class, returning Naples racer Schultz also led the distance, covering the 12-lap distance in just over four minutes to officially close out the month of racing in Canandaigua. For the record, ironically Schultz, is credited with his first Legends victory exactly eight years earlier during Labor Day Weekend on Sept. 3, 2016.
“Think the last time I actually ran a whole race here was 2016,” recalled Schultz, nephew of multi-time LOLR winner Steve Scultz, who owns trophies in Modified, Sportsman and Street Stock classes as well as three Expert stock car crowns and the inaugural Sportsman title in 1987. His father Dan Schultz took 11 checkered flags from 1982-86 in amateur stock car competition spread across Expert, Novice and Rookie divisions. “Wouldn’t have done it without Jeff, Michelle and his family.”
“Jeff bought this car, we sat down and talked about it and said let’s both come out here and try to run. Split the car up. He busted his butt all week, can’t thank him enough. Really wanted to come out here and do this so my kids could actually see me race. This one means a lot,” added Schultz, after teammate and car owner Jeff Palmiter finished 17th in the top flight Sportsman main steering the same no. 9P Schultz Heating & Cooling-U-Haul of Watkins Glen/TEO Pro car.
Dylan Woodworth, Evan Gray, Kyle Ridley and recent sprinter Sydney Wetherbee filled out the final front-five.
SEPTEMBER (DATES) TO REMEMBER
While the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds is dark this coming weekend, top teams are back in full force for the final two events of the ‘24 season at Land Of Legends Raceway.
Taking center stage Sat. Sept. 14 will be the 6th Annual Gerald Haers Memorial presented by Phelps Cement Products with the 100-lap Big-Block Modified feature race winner collecting $10,000 plus plenty more in cash and contingency prizes. A lucrative prize of $2,000 awaits the victor in the Stirling Lubricants Northeast Sportsman Series Fall Championship final covering a distance of 40 laps around the fast Finger Lakes half-miler. Erick Rudolph (Mod) and Gavin Eisele (Spt) shared last year’s first-place fortune.
*REMINDER: The make-up DIRTcar Sportsman feature from Aug. 24 now fills out the 9/14 show after which the 2024 track points champion will be recognized.
Following another weekend off in Canandaigua, action returns to LOLR for the ‘24 curtain-closer on Sat. Sept. 28. The 13th Les Whyte Top Gun Shootout headlines the ‘Saturday Spectacular’ with iFreeze Storage & Distribution Center bolstering the 40-lap Empire Street Stock Series winner’s total to a record $2,000. CRSA 305 Sprinters join the evening program in their own tour finale with a 20-lap $750-to-win Hobby Stock feature plus Sportsman Special filling out the four-star show.
With the event held in tribute to the late LOLR Pro Stock champion and driver of the sleek Top Gun #1 machine, Grant beat out Pennsylvania invader Shane Wolf Jr. last year while Western New York racer Dave Schulz captured the inaugural title race in 1999. Not to be outdone, Minutolo fended off the son/father duo of Tyler and Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. to claim the companion Hobby Stock main a year ago.

In a most fitting tribute to one of the first families of racing at the Land of Legends, the Haers Family will be honored as the newest members of the Wall of Fame on Saturday, Sept 14 prior to the start of qualifying for the 6th Annual Gerald Haers Memorial. The Haers clan joins recent additions Mike Minutolo Sr. and Jipp Ortiz in Canandaigua's Class of '24, with the last member named Sat. Sept. 28.
