Sheppard Back On Track At Land Of Legends With Second Win Of Season

Kolosek, Welch & Kerrick also double up as Cooper cops first & Spoor Scores fourth victory

Land Of Legends Raceway was a hotbed for repeat winners in the latest ‘Saturday Spectacular’ as Matt Sheppard (Pepsi Big-Block Modified), Johnny Kolosek (MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car), Mike Welch (Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock) and Daniel Kerrick (Lloyd's Contracting Hobby Stock) each collected their second checkered flags of the 2024 season.

 

Open-wheel stalwart Nick Cooper reached victory lane for the first time this summer in the Stirling Lubricants Sportsman Modified main while teenage upstart Chase Spoor added his fourth win in Maguire Ford of Canandaigua New Legends Sportsman competition.

 

The full-fender firsts were financial windfalls for Welch and Kerrick as they both earned a $100 Prouty’s Bar bonus: Welch ending points leader Jimmy Grant’s two-race win streak while Kerrick stopped Justin Eldredge’s run of two straight.

 

With rain falling in surrounding areas forcing cancellation of motorsports programs south and east of the Ontario County Fairgrounds oval, LOLR promoter Paul Cole forged ahead to put Ryan Phelps Auto Sales, Disbatch Brewing Company and LSI Solutions Night in the record books.

 

The result was over 100 race teams signed in pitside, featuring a bountiful 21 Big-Block teams, 28 Sportsman squads, 23 Sprinters, a combined tally of 27 stock cars and a season-best total of 10 New Legends entries with the Canandaigua VA stationed as the evening’s 50/50 beneficiary.

 

No driver was more dominant in the six-division speedway show than ‘Super Matt’ as Sheppard led all 30-laps to register Big-Block career win number 92 at LOLR.

 

“That afternoon rain definitely did this place good, what a race track tonight,” remarked Sheppard, who also owns 10 first-place trophies in Canandaigua’s companion Sportsman class to elevate his overall track total to 102. “I’m just happy to be sitting here, don’t think we’ve finished a race with this car in about a month.”

 

“This is about as close to a gimme as you can get. A pole starting position in a caution-free race. But just finishing 30 laps lately here has been a struggle for us so I guess we’ll take it and move on to the next one,” figured Sheppard, whose only top-five tally the last month at LOLR was second to track points leader Mat Williamson in the Super DIRTcar Series event held July 4 .

 

Ninth, 14th and 15th-place finishes the past three weekends in Canandaigua put the Waterloo warrior on the point and without a single yellow flag unfurled during the 15-mile main, the no. 9S Hurlock Auto & Speed-Westmoreland Golf Club-St. Lawrence Radiology/Bicknell entry was untouchable for the duration.

 

Sheppard’s front row partner Daniel Johnson Jr. chased early before his uncle Alan Johnson grabbed second five laps in. The younger Johnson remained solid yet as the consecutive green flag laps clicked off the strong core of veteran wheelmen successfully navigated their way forward through the 20-car pack.

 

Behind front-runners Sheppard and ‘A.J. Slideways,’ high point man Williamson began 13th, needing to make a late race charge and grab third from Justin Haers on lap 29 while third-generation driver Johnson secured his second front-five finish of the season. Yet under the checkers it was still Sheppard all alone by a half-track taking less than 10 minutes to pocket another $2,000 paycheck.

 

“The track was really fast in the heat race, low 17s (seconds) in warm-ups. That’s like track record material and that’s as fast as this place gets,” commented Sheppard, with former track champ Billy Decker credited with the modern-day mark of 17.125sec (105.109mph) established in August of 2007. “It was wide and smooth, blew off and got black in the middle for the feature but a nice top (groove) and nice bottom. That’s about as nice as this place gets.”

 

“Just kinda ride it out (when leading) and see what happens. Sometimes it works out for you and sometimes it doesn’t. Thankfully for us tonight everything worked out,” added Sheppard, the Northeast’s winningest Big-Block driver now with 19 triumphs.

 

While Sheppard’s margin of victory was nearly 10-seconds in real time, Cooper’s once commanding lead in the 25-lap Sportsman finale was far less comfortable in the closing stages. A half-dozen car-lengths separated Cooper from Karl Comfort with a mile to go yet when chief starter Scott Hixson dropped his double checkered flags, the only difference was 0.10sec. with bumpers ultimately rubbing as the lead pair passed the finish line with no room to spare.

 

“I always learned on the last lap to always protect (turns) three and four. Probably shouldn’t have but it’s probably the best thing to do,” divulged Cooper, 32, now with three Sportsman wins to go along with seven 305 Sprint victories at LOLR. “You can give away a race like that. Something (size of lead) you never know when you’re out front, never know where they are.”

 

Outside pole-sitter Nick Ventura out-dueled fellow front row starter Justin Liechti before Torrey Stoughtenger’s car broke entering turn one to tighten the massive 28-car field. Liechti jumped out front on the ensuing lap five restart and Cooper moved his #35 Nardozzi Paving & Construction-Seneca Meadows-The Grime Guys/Bicknell car into second with 10 laps scored.

 

A minor caution period on lap 13 once again slowed the action and this time it was Cooper taking advantage to move out front with 11 to go. Following a fast high line around the half-mile, Cooper opened a big lead while a great battle behind him between Liechti, Comfort and points leader Zach Sobotka kept second-place up in the air with only five laps left.

 

Comfort finally cleared the competition following his preferred low line around the speedway and appeared poised to settle for second in the closing segment. Yet in a mad last lap dash as Cooper moved low in the final two corners, Comfort slid up high rounding turn four in a counter attack, ultimately producing a paint-trading finish to the delight of the grandstand throng.

 

Sobotka placed third while Liechti posted his first top-five of the season ahead of second-generation chauffeur Gordon Smith in his first-ever start at the fairgrounds.

 

“I found a lot of things geometry-wise that were gone and not right and it paid off,” noted the night’s second winner from Waterloo. “Dad (Mike) can’t help me now because of his shoulder but it’s awesome to always have his guidance.”

 

While a mere tenth of a second separated the Sportsman front-runners, just over a half-second was the difference between Kolosek and points leader Bobby Parrow in the 305 A-Main that needed nearly all 20 laps to be decided.

 

“Think I just played my cards right with the lapped traffic and picked the right line,” stated Kolosek, following his seventh career win registered at LOLR. “In those situations it’s kind of a coin toss on where they’re gonna go. You win some, you lose some.”

 

After snatching the lead from pole-sitter Alysha Bay on lap four, on this occasion Kolosek seemed destined to be the winner for the second time in 2024. Yet veteran wingman Parrow was his usual quick self from the start. Falling into 12th on the 23-car grid minus Kolosek’s teammate Tori Kaplin, Parrow found himself fourth with some good fortune on lap 13 when Randy Years slowed down the back straightaway to incur the lone caution period.

 

Parrow bolted into second on the lap 13 restart then needed four more times around to slide under Kolosek as the top two jockeyed through turns three and four. Traffic became a concern for the leaders yet unlike in his previous two wins this season, Parrow suddenly got bogged down low and in a slingshot move up high exiting turn four it was Kolosek once again out front with the white flag firmly in Hixson’s hand.

 

The final half-mile remained nip-n-tuck, leaving a margin of only 0.506 seconds difference at the line as high-flying kid Kolsek in his no. 26J Todd's Towing-Pet Passages Crematory/Mach1 machine held off perennial powerhouse Parrow for the dramatic victory. *After a post-race protest of Parrow’s engine, the powerplant was inspected early Sunday morning and deemed legal by CRSA officials, reinstating Parrow’s points and monetary earnings from Saturday night.

 

Blake Warner placed third ahead of Tyler Graves in his best finish of the season followed by Bay and reigning track points king Jordan Hutton.

 

“Feels very, very good, things have been going great,” beamed Kolosek, who won his first race June 8, ironically on the same night Sheppard notched his initial win of the ‘24 Canandaigua campaign. “Can’t thank Todd (Kaplin) from Todd’s Towing enough and everybody that helps make this happen. All these guys that help us, been really great, can’t ask for more.”

 

For weekly Street Stock rivals Welch and Grant, not much more can be expected of the division’s top two point-getters. In nine events run this season, the lead duo account for eight wins and another eight runner-up feature finishes; not to mention a combined total of 116 career Street Stock victories now in Ontario County.

 

“The race car was really good but probably a lot of the credit needs to go to that guy over there … Richie (Yahn, head track prep man) puts in a lot of hard work here and I’ll be honest with you, this is the best the track has probably been in long, long, long time so hats off to the whole crew,” pointed out Welch, himself now an 88-time feature winner at the fairgrounds.

 

C.J. Guererri charged from fourth to first to kick off the 20-lap Street Stock feature with sixth starting Welch in pursuit right behind. Welch needed just two more times around to nose ahead aboard his #00 Mountain Dew-Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling-TLC Trips Chevrolet Camaro while Grant dropped Guererri to third on lap seven sliding low to high through turns three and four.

 

Guererri rebounded on lap nine yet Grant regained second at the halfway mark to set his sights on Welch. But by that time the leader was almost out of view, building up a near half-straightaway advantage without the Stanley driver ever looking back.

 

In the caution-free affair that lasted just over seven minutes, Welch increased the margin to three seconds with five laps left before it ballooned to nearly a full straightaway and five-second gap when the checkered flag finally waved. 

 

Grant settled for his third runner-up finish of the year followed by Guererri, Marc Minutolo and John Burritt in his first front-five of the season.

 

“Never know (who’s fast) until you look at the leaderboard,” said Welch, who has been circling LOLR for the past quarter-century. “Jimmy, that car’s fast. We were just hoping we could keep running our line and do what we had to do and here we are. Hopefully we turned the corner. Last month we took (car) down to Joe (in Pa.) at CRS, got a lot of help from Glenn Whritenour and this car has really been good.”

 

An early tangle in the 15-lap Hobby feature did little to slow Kerrick as the third-generation driver from Stanley needed only three times around to blast from last to first steering the potent #61 Fratto Curbing-Mike O. from Geneva Truck Repair Chevrolet Camaro.

 

“One of the cars got up into Brighton (Grant), he got sideways and I was right there with nowhere to go,” began Kerrick, attempting to explain the opening lap incident that forced him to restart from the rear of the 17-car field with no laps complete. “I ended up hitting him and slamming on the brakes spinning around.”
 

“Came in the pits, figured something was wrong because I hit him pretty hard. The (crew) guys said ‘keep it going’ … then we got in that wreck with Marc Minutolo and we tapped him again. So I got up high  in turns three and four and slowed it down to make sure they could see if anything was wrong. They told me to keep going and we just kept going,” said Kerrick, who ranks third behind only Minutolo and Nate Peckham in the current point standings.

 

After the first lap skirmish, Justin Jacoby assumed the lead before Eddie Stevens took over on the second half-mle. Yellow lights flashed again on lap three after contact with Jacoby sent runner-up Minutolo spinning low out of turn three. On the ensuing restart Kerrick bolted from sixth to first to author the final lead change despite two more cautions slowing the action.

 

Peckham climbed as high as second with five to go attempting to run down Kerrick, yet he suddenly slowed taking a quick left to the back stretch infield giving Minutolo back the runner-up spot with three laps remaining. At the finish it was Kerrick with a straightaway win followed by Minutolo, Stevens, Tyler Burnell and Blane Smith.

 

“Thought it was gonna be pretty slippery coming out here (end of the night) but it felt like we could stay on the throttle and keep it going,” added Kerrick, after logging his fifth career victory at LOLR.

 

The 12-lap New Legends Sportsman finale featured four females and three first-timers at the fairgrounds yet in the end not much had changed after Spoor cruisied home for his fourth win of the year.

 

After leader Elizabeth Nugent’s mount went up in smoke on lap three, Spoor inherited the top spot and outlasted Kyle Ridley for a convincing half-straightaway victory behind the wheel of the family-owned #41S Rushco Gas Company-Friendly Ford-Cargill-Conley Farms/Bicknell entry.

 

“Was pretty scary with (Nugent) and all that smoke, couldn’t see anything and my helmet got all wet with oil and stuff,” Spoor said. “Thought there would be a few more cars with all the rain outs but its been good learning different lanes to run and how to get through traffic every week.”

 

Behind Ridley, Belle Hogan crossed the line third ahead of Dylan Woodworth and first-timer Wayne Swinson towing in from Canada followed by Ransomville Speedway regulars Jocelyn Just and Jacklyn Nettleton.

 

LEGEND LEDGER

The final full month of racing continues at Land Of Legends Raceway with Geneva Club Beverage and Cargill taking center stage for the August 10 'Saturday Spectacular.' A packed six-division program of Big-Block Modified, Sportsman, 305 Sprint, Street Stock, Hobby Stock plus New Legends Sportsman headline the card that includes Kids Power Wheels Races while Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes is the weekly 50/50 beneficiary. Pit gates open at 3:30pm, spectators are admitted at 5 o'clock and hot laps start at 5:30 followed by the first qualifier going green at 6:30pm.

 

SUMMERFAST SIZZLES

The Super DIRTcar Series makes its return to the Land of Legends when Big-Block Modifieds move to the forefront Tue. Aug. 13 in the “SummerFAST 75” paying the winner $7,500. The mighty Mod Squad will be joined by the DIRTcar 358-Modifieds with the companion 30-lap Small-Block feature winner collecting a cool $2G. Honeoye Auto Parts returns to present another dynamic doubleheader with Mat Williamson (BB Mod) looking to match his tour triumph taken down at LOLR on July 4. Current Big-Block series points chaser Jimmy Phelps won the last 358-Mod race recorded at the fairgrounds in September 2008.

 

The 2024 edition of “SummerFAST” kicks off with a super swing through Central New York at Brewerton Speedway on Mon. Aug. 12 and continues in Canandaigua on Tuesday before heading back east to Fulton Speedway on Wed. Aug. 14 for the third and final leg. LOLR pit gates unlock Tuesday at 4 p.m., grandstand seating opens at 5 o'clock and Big-Block group time trials go off the line at 6:30 before opening ceremonies are held at 7:00.
